Our designers in their wisdom chose two Google fonts (which most people outside our company do not have installed) as the main header and body fonts.

So we are forced by default to use PowerPoints embed fonts feature to ensure that our clients will see the presentation as intended without unwanted font substitution.

This works fine in most cases where we can tightly control the source slides.

Users inevitably cut and paste in old slides that bring with them other fonts, but we teach them how to Replace Fonts to get rid of those.

But the Replace function doesnt always work, and PowerPoint will continue to display phantom fonts that are not actually used anywhere in the presentation.

Its well documented that PowerPoint has some flaws when dealing with fonts, but we really need to fix this.

I wrote a VBA macro that lists out all the fonts in the Presentation.fonts collection, then goes through every shape on every slide and layout and spits out the font used.

VBA can only find five of the fonts, and every other font in the listout is either Playfair or Roboto (the 2 Google fonts).

I know for certain that the phantom fonts ARE in the file, because if I save the presentation as XML and use Notepad to search, I can find instances of and all the other phantom fonts.

Id like to write a macro to replace them all, but they arent even exposed to VBA in the first place, so how can I find them Can anybody tell me how to clean these out with code.

The one that catches most folk out is the font of a bullet character (especially in the slide master and possibly custom layouts) so make sure you check that with your code too e.g.

Its essentially a whole bunch of find-replace, usually replacing with nothing because usually theres no reason for the font setting since you generally want things to use the theme fonts, which they will do by default.

A lot of times when users have created things on the Mac, complex script font settings are added by default.

These get added to everything, though, not just shapes and placeholders as Im seeing in the VBA above.

Oh, and youll also find these fonts in embedded objects such as charts and tables (from Excel).

The XML find and replace method works well for me, and is the solution Ive been using when a user runs into this problem.

But Ive got a company of 400 people using this new template, so we desperately need a button the user can hit to fix this themselves, so they dont have to send their file to me or to the help desk.

Is there any way for VBA to get access to the XML without the user having to do a Save As.

That explains it.) I dont know the answer to the VBA accessing the XML question.
